Swedish Meatballs

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams (1 lb) ground beef

  • 1 yellow onion, finely grated or diced (about ½ cup)

  • 1 slice of white bread (some use breadcrumbs instead)

  • 1 deciliter (0.5 cup) milk

  • 1 large egg, whisked

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon pepper

How to make it:

  1. Begin by trimming the crusts from the bread slice. Pour the milk over the bread and allow it to soak until it dissolves. Use a fork to help break it down.

  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef and salt. Add the pepper, whisked egg, and the milk-soaked bread mixture.

  3. Be cautious not to overmix the ingredients, as this could result in tough meatballs. If you prefer to use a mixer, add all the ingredients at once and let the machine work for 15-30 seconds, just enough to evenly combine them.

  4. Keep a bowl of cold water nearby and wet your hands before shaping the meat mixture into uniform-sized balls. You can use a tablespoon to help gauge the correct size.

  5. Heat a pan with butter over medium heat. Fry a smaller batch of meatballs at a time, gently shaking the pan to ensure they maintain their round shape.

Serve the meatballs with your choice of potatoes, creamy pepper sauce, and lingonberry jam.

For a spicier flavor, consider adding allspice and nutmeg to the mixture. Some prefer to incorporate the nutmeg into the mashed potatoes and the spices into the sauce. Enjoy your delicious homemade meatballs!
