To refurbish an old home is to embark on a journey of carefully aligning with and celebrating its original aesthetic, or meticulously evaluating each piece of furniture unearthed during your quest, with the hope that it seamlessly integrates into the overall ambiance.

Within the dining room, known as "matsal," a fusion of Swedish Gustavian styles takes center stage, comprising an eclectic ensemble of three distinct chair types, various tables, and a glassware and tableware cabinet. The Gustavian chairs encircling the dining table draw inspiration from English furniture design, exuding a striking architectural essence.

Every piece of furniture within this setting boasts a remarkable degree of symmetry and intricate carved detailing, a hallmark of the Gustavian style. While these furnishings were historically adorned with soft, muted colors, in this house, the choice has been made to retain their natural wood finish, allowing the exquisite woodwork to shine through, infusing the space with an understated yet timeless charm.

The living room with its light green base and golden yellow patterned wallpaper makes it an ideal place to gather and have a comfortable time with family and guests.

The focal point in the living room consists of the sofa, armrest chairs, and the drop-leaf table. This style is known as Swedish Karl Johan, influenced by the French Empire Style and German Biedermeir.

The Karl Johan style in Sweden evolved to be simpler and more subdued. Instead of using brass fittings like in the Empire style, the wood itself was intricately carved. The furniture gained armrests and curved backs, providing better seating comfort.

All the pieces of furniture are uniform, crafted from the same type of wood and in the same style. During the 1800s, the sofa group became a cohesive unit with soft and comfortable seating, allowing it to remain in the room permanently. Previously, furniture was moved around as needed and placed back against the walls after use.

At the old farmstead Stan, a few pieces of furniture have been passed down from the original owners, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the search for new pieces.

Some might argue that a farmer's family didn't have the means to enhance the overall design of their home. They tended to prioritize simplicity and functionality over aesthetics, whereas the more affluent urban dwellers had the resources to focus on decorative elements.

Nevertheless, historical accuracy was never the primary objective, more to evoke a sense of a bygone era.

Renovating an older home or refurbishing is a journey where you must make deliberate choices that honor and celebrate its original aesthetic. It involves a meticulous evaluation of every piece of furniture or decor you come across during your renovation process.
